Bletchley Circle A Good Series Four Women Home Detectives

Bletchley Circle British Crime Drama
Bletchley Circle British Crime Drama

One of the most interesting thing about Bletchley Circle is the all women detectives. It is fun to see that there are no gender wars and women prove themselves to be as efficient, thoughtful and resourceful when it comes to nailing down criminals. This  is a post war series where women who earlier worked as code crackers at the Bletchley Park are now retired from service and have been forbidden to reveal what they did during the war. These four ladies are exceptional in their abilities in different aspects of code cracking. Out of the four Susan (Anna Maxwell Martin) is a happily married house wife with two children. As murders begin in the 1964 to 1968 era London, Susan is quick to detect a pattern in the killings. She finds out similarities and comes up with an algorithm and presents it to the police officer. However, her derivations are proven wrong. She does not get discouraged or stop, as the numbers and brutality of murders increase, she sets out on a mission to find other team members who worked with her during the war, She meets Millie (Rachel Stirling), Jean (Julie Graham) and Lucy (Sophie Rundle), each one of them are living their own life. bletchley circle season2
bletchley circle season2

During season 1, one of the most interesting things about this series was the camaraderie among women, they push themselves to see, watch and solve gruesome murders where they know the criminal is exceptionally intelligent and very capable. They match his level of intelligence and keep following leads by hook or crook. They do not look away from even the most disturbing aspects of the war like the psychological warfare, even though these facts affect their sensitivities. In a way, the entire series keeps all four smart women as women, never do they try to look or act like men. They sort out personal problems as well as those pertaining with the case. Each one has her own specific sphere of code cracking therefore, each one is important. In the first series, the serial killer comes to know Susan is on his tracks, therefore, quickly lays a trap for her. Mr. Cavendish who was heading the psychological warfare team in war identifies the killer. However, the killer’s threat to Susan and her family rattles her and they end up going on a transfer.

Series 2: This is a complicated bit of a story, former Bletchley Park code cracker is being tried for murder though she is innocent. Since Susan has left, the other three are determined to set the former colleague (Alice Merren played by Hattie Morahan) free. They unearth the truth about her daughter. They set about normalizing her life however, she is unable to find a job. Millie offers to help only to stumble upon an illegal racket of which Millie is a part. With the help of Alice who takes place of Susan, the four crack this case where young girls are being trafficked.. The criminal uses the Enigma machine to code, this is what they use to crack the code for the case. They use every ruse in the book to ensure they are able to monitor the criminal. Lucy is an important member who has a photographic memory, Millie is a dare devil with good knowledge of the ongoings and Jean is a senior with good connections with the bureaucracy. Susan and Alice are the ones who get and keep all four of them together.

There are many characters associated with the series, like Susan’s husband who is supportive though he does not know the truth about her. Lucy separates from her abusive husband and towards the end of the series finds another very interesting man. Alice’s daughter who is willing to let Alice hang because she thinks it was her who murdered her father. However, as she comes to know that Alice is her mother, she does not spend more time getting together with her. Alice starts her on good schooling as they get normal.  Another important character of Jasper is played by Rob Jarvis. Millie’s partner who gets murdered brutally during the final installment of the series. However, he is not that faithful and unnecessarily involves Millie in his dealings with the Mafia.

This series was stopped by the makers for unknown reasons, however, the beauty of this series was some impeccable acting, unusual and very interesting story. Simple yet charming is how you can describle ‘Bletchley Circle’ series.

Fargo Season 1 A Bone Chilling Subtly Terrifying Tale of Crime Mischief & Danger That Lurks In A Quiet Town

fargo dark comedy
FArgo Season 1

Fargo Season 1 is every bit of best crime thriller that someone who loves this genre will find fascinating. A small town where people are not what they seem. The ordinary is actually something superb, the simple and mousy is evil. In an overview it all seems like pieces of dominoes that start falling with a single interaction between the Lester Nygaard (Martin Freeman) and Lorne Malvo (Billy Bob Thornton). Lester Nygaard is a insurance salesman with no so happening personal and professional life. His wife does not leave a single opportunity to abuse him and make him feel worthless.

Living in a small town of Bemidji, Lester has to face his childhood bully who insults him again this time in from of his children. Tormented and injured Lester is hurt and visits the hospital for a quick patch up. While in waiting room, Lester meets with Lorne Malvo who is there to get himself treated from injuries. Malvo has been on killing spree and is already being searched for in the geographical area. Malvo ends up listening to his woes and giving subtle message of killing the bully Sam Hess. Lester prods Lorne to kill him himself, a weird ‘Yes’, prompts not so nice death for Sam Hess.  As the series proceeds, it is quite astounding to see underdog Lester’s transformation into a confident man who will not stop at any devilry.

Lester kills his wife stages as if it was murder, Malvo kills police officer who came to Lester’s house and saw the dead body of Lester’s wife. However, Lester stages it like an attack but is however injured on his hand. Police is heart-broken when the Chief is killed, however, the responsibility then falls on someone who is not prepared to face the facts nor the blood that each murder brings. Malvo does not spend much time in killing another one. He manages to kill the person who bullied Lester, bolstering Lester’s courage for killing his wife.

Malvo is a hit man, who kills people for money. However, his quirky style is to leave his victims in the snowclad isolated woody stretches where the terrified victim seeks hiding space and dies with hypothermia. This is because his clothes have been removed by Malvo and they are in their underwear. With numerous deaths turning up in their vicinity, the Bemidji police show their grit and determination. Molly Solverson (Allison Tolman) is left to investigate the crimes. Bill Oswalt (Bob Odenkirk) becomes the Chief of Police.

Slow small town with negligible crimes becomes a place that is battling with people being murdered in a sudden spurt. Gus Grimly (Colin Hanks) is on traffic duty when he sees Lorne Malvo (Billy Bob Thornton) for the first time and is made to visit the police station where he meets Molly. He gives the description of the criminal however, he is under no suspicion until he is seen with Lester. As time passes more characters get involved in the story. There is Lester’s brother whom he frames as a murderer. There is also growing intimacy between Molly and Gus. Gus’s daughter sees Molly as probable mother, who she wants and a family which she would love to have. Both Molly and Gus get married and towards the end Molly is pregnant.

As a traffic policeman, Gus does have an interesting encounter with Malvo where he threatens Gus. As a result he lets Malvo get away. Meanwhile, after wife’s death Lester has found new found confidence. As an insurance salesman he tops the sales and marries a colleague. In Lester’s bid to escape imminent arrest he involves several other innocent characters. Lorne earns money through blackmail where both Lester and Lorne have moved on and got themselves happier successful normal lives. However, Lester being the over confident man sees Malvo in a cafe, and their now settled lives take turn for the worse.

Fargo Season 1 CASt
Fargo Season 1 Cast

Entire cast is sort of full with dark humor, there is no space for laughter in between all the mayhem and killing brought on by Malvo. He diminishes every competition and ends up killing entire mafia house even though there is FBI working on their case. The story of Fargo Season 1 is intricate and entertaining. Every character is true to its self form. Molly is brave compared to Gus who never did want to become a police officer he wanted to become a mailman which he does become.

There are lighter moments because of hit men sent to kill the killer of Sam Hess by crime syndicate boss. This duo is not just funny, they do end up adding more to the speedy trail of crime that has been set up by Lorne Malvo. There are also couple of FBI agents who are not competent and attentive enough. Sam Hess’s wife discovers that she does not have any insurance money coming through because two installments were not paid.

The climax is very interesting and involves every important character. Unlike other fast paced crime series, this one travels at a slow rural pace with happenings resonating with the cold and hard climate. However, clear and crisp visuals and suspenseful music lead to adding more thrill to this superb Fargo Season 1 series that should never be missed.

Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency A Confused Laugh Riot Which Sorts At End!

If you want to watch something that is fun, yet quirky and thrilling you should watch Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency. A mixture of cuteness combined with absolute unpredictable quirky characters has a brush with supernatural throughout the series. The dialogues happen to be unbelievably simple yet unique. However, though beginning is absolutely chaotic, things start falling into place once the season  1 gets over.

Here is a wee bit of overview of this super cool serial:

  1. Dirk Gently (Samuel Barnett) is a holistic detective who is something special and things are ‘fundamentally interconnected’ and that him as a detective does not bother with petty things like taking finger prints. He has been hired by the reclusive rich scientist Patrick Spring to solve his own murder before he died. Dirk Gently looks perfect for the role of this cool detective.
  2. Todd (Elijah Wood): Works as a bell boy at the hotel where Patrick Spring died. He is also the one who loses his job, car and apartment in one day and reluctantly ends up becoming assistant as well as a friend of Dirk Gently. Todd plays the irritated, depressed, out of work bloke quite well.
  3. Amanda (Hannah Marks): Todd’s sister who suffers from a rare disease called ‘pararibulitis’. She needs Todd’s support to do the smallest things and is continuously on medication to control this condition. With finances in bad condition, here is one twist in the story. Looks at things with unnatural intelligence often comes to the rescue of Dirk and Todd.
  4. Zimmerfield and Estevan (Neil Brown Jr. & Richard Schiff) Police officers who are looking into the case of missing persons. Zimmerman is a perfectionist and Estevan a little lost. Both compliment each other throughout the season 1 story line.
  5. Lydia Spring (Alison Thornton): Young daughter of Patrick Spring who has gone AWOL and the police has been contacted to find her. She is sighted in first episode but has been behaving weirdly for quite some time.
  6. Rowdy 3: Four blokes who tend to suck out emotions especially when a person is going through an emotional upheavel. Are mysterious and aggressive, weirdly they harm only the bad guys. These belong to the ‘Incubus Project’.
  7. Military: Two men who are keeping a watch on Dirk Gently. Often creates funny moments because the police is watching Todd.
  8. Farah Black (Jade Eshete) The super fighter Black is Lydia’s body guard and sort of buddy. She is out to save Lydia and worships Patrick Spring for his generosity with her. Farah has some cool skills. Lydia trusts Farah explicitly.
  9. Bart Curlish (Fiona Dourif): As a holistic killer, she kills everyone she meets. In fact everyone who crosses her path is destined to die with the exception of Ken (Mpho Koaho) who accompanies her on the journey to find Dirk Gently whom she is supposed to kill. Since she her job is to kill, people will find reference where those who died at her hands were not saints.
  10. Gordon Rimmer (Aaron Douglas) becomes the Supreme Soul who is out to find out another part of the machine. Incidentally it is a machine created by Patrick Spring that has started this series of unnatural happenings.
  11. Patrick Spring: Man who has hired Dirk Gently is a brilliant engineer cum scientist. People are after machines that promise to be somewhat awesome even in high technology times like today.

Story begins with gory killing of Patrick Spring and his body guard. Its gory yet quirky. The mixture of confusion and a wonder at what could have caused a amount of destruction. Entry of our hero is fun too, the starts entering through the window of Todd’s home, already angry Todd throws him out of the house. Samuel Barnett does look immensely innocent and harmless as Dirk. He is understandably quite irritating to Todd where he tries to set up his lodging and tries to make Todd his assistant and a friend.

All characters are shown doing their real business, Todd is a real loser, Dirk tries to come off as a real detective, Bart is on a killing spree and the police, CBI and FBI all are doing their business in tailing Dirk. Not a single frame goes without entertaining you. You will feel happy, spooked and impatient enough to go in for story to unfold. From demonized soul, machine that can exchange souls and weird people who are practically evil are there to add to the excitement.

A dog, disappearance of Lydia Spring, Farah, etc., all make a lot of sense once you have got the ‘holistic’ picture of this entire season. There are many aspects which are confusing. Real fun begins when seemingly common siblings like Amanda and Todd start unraveling puzzles that seem to confuse even the best of minds. A series of cryptic clues have been left by Patrick Spring who knows his past and future.

However, towards the end it is obvious that the danger is far from over, the real good guys have died. But though the evil rises so does the good. Lydia Spring shares huge amount of her money with Farah who invests in the Dirk Gently Holistic Detective Agency making it stronger.

However, till date another season has not started of this very entertaining series written by Douglas Adams.
